You want a dog?

"Don't Breed or Buy While Poundies Die"

According to statistics from the Dogs Trust 7 dogs per hour are killed in the UK every day. Every single hour. Every single day.

Why?

Because puppy farms and back street breeders churn out dogs, sell them to anyone that has the cash. No home checks, no checking if the people understand how much work and effort you must put in to get a polite and happy puppy. So, they buy a puppy, when it gets big enough to notice it jumps up and hurts, they blame it on the dog, throw it out, and go get a new one. Or they buy the dog and then don't neuter. Get an accidental mating and have 8 puppies to re-home. Those 8 are the same. Their 64 offspring are the same, the 3rd generation you have 5184 puppies to find homes for.

Or you get delightful people who get a puppy for Christmas. And want a new one for next Christmas. Or sell it to buy birthday presents in a few months.

Then there are folks that think they want a dog to fit in with one lifestyle, and then find they can't maintain that lifestyle. Like a Border collie puppy not fitting in well with slow moving sedentary lifestyles. You also get lovely, wonderful people who really want a puppy for all the right reasons. Put all the effort in. Then ill health, divorce, lost jobs, economic downturns forces them to be unable to afford the full and correct care of a dog.

Some people think they have a better idea of what personality they are getting if they get a dog from puppy hood. However, all dogs in rescue are fully assessed so you know exactly what you’re getting. A puppy will develop according to how good an owner you are. You may also not realise it, but almost every single puppy in a pet shop has been bred in a puppy farm. One bitch can be kept in a small space all her life, bred from 8 or 9 or more times in a row. No walks, no play, no human interaction, no life. Those pups will be sold to pet shops or back street breeders. They will pretend the mother is this lovely healthy bitch over here and take your £100's off you, Time and again. With no remorse. Not even a glimmer of guilt.

If you want a dog, please only go to a reputable rescue and adopt from them. That allows the rescue to then save the life of another dog in the pound. They can assess that new dog, and make sure it goes to the right home.

Please do not think of adopting a dog as getting a cheaper dog. they still cost the same amount to neuter, microchip, vaccinate, worm and de-flea. they still need annual vaccinations and insurance. if you can't afford these things perhaps now is not the right time for you to adopt a dog.
